NEW YORK CENTRAL

POSTWAR AAR 40’ BOX CARS

NYC-003

In 1945, the New York Central acquired 2000 all steel 40’ box cars from their Despatch Shops in East Rochester, NY.  An additional 1000 cars were assembled at the same location in 1947.  In 1948, the road purchased an additional 2000 similar cars, 1000 each from Greenville Steel Car and American Car and Foundry.  The first order was equipped with the prewar version of the Youngstown door, while all three later orders featured 5/6/6 Improved Youngstown Doors.  These cars were built to the AAR standard design of the era, using 4/4 Improved Dreadnaught ends and rectangular panel roofs.

This kit is available in 6 versions, as the cars came with different door and running board designs, and two styles of lettering are available.  Refer to the list below to determine what version is appropriate for your modeling era.

The kit contains a pair of polyurethane resin ends, a pair of polyurethane or styrene doors as appropriate to the series, a polyurethane or styrene running board as appropriate to the series, a Pacific Rail Shops undecorated shell with detail parts and trucks, CDS dry transfer lettering, car data with expanded instructions, and a few other bits and pieces required to build an accurate model of this prototype.

This box car is also available as an unboxed conversion kit (see 500 series below,) for which the modeler must supply a PRS 10’6” IH AAR box car kit.  Polyurethane resin ends, CDS dry transfer lettering, car data with expanded instructions, and a few other bits and pieces are included; some versions include polyurethane doors and/or running boards as well.
