6’ 4/5/5 Improved Youngstown Door
Shortly after WWII,
Standard Railway Equipment Manufacturing Company developed a new version of
their Youngstown door. It featured
a raised, riveted seam between each of the three panels and a single door lever
centered at the bottom. The
associated starting mechanism was located internally. Box cars with the new door installed were delivered
beginning in 1945. There were
several distinct panel arrangements offered, two being the most common: one
with 4/5/5 corrugations and one with 5/5/4 corrugations. This polyurethane casting represents a
6 foot wide door of the former panel arrangement, first installed in 1946, and
used on cars with 10’6” IH. SRCC
offers kits for the following roads that purchased cars with this door: CBQ, CNW, and NYC.
